Scope: Research in the field of wind engineering regarding the experimental analysis of the storm-induced structural response of telecommunication lattice towers in Romania. The project pursues two specific objectives, namely: (1) thunderstorm detection and analysis of the wind parameters corresponding to these phenomena and (2) experimental analysis of structural response of telecommunications lattice towers to the action induced by both synoptic winds as well as thunderstorm winds. The results obtained within this project will provide essential data for ensuring the wind safety of the latticed structures used in the field of telecommunications. Also, the detection and analysis of thunderstorms will allow the introduction of this type of phenomenon in future wind codes in Romania as a distinct action from that produced by the synoptic wind.

DICCA-UNIGE is the repository of the ERC (European Research Council) Advanced Grant 2016 THUNDERR – 741273 (http://www.thunderr.eu/).  According to the activities of the THUNDERR Project (Work Package 4, Task L), experimental analysis of the storm-induced structural response, based on full-scale measurements of real structures, is required. DICCA-UNIGE is interested in monitoring different poles and towers very exposed to thunderstorm actions in different parts of the world. In this context, DICCA-UNIGE has ensured funding for the acquisition of a full-scale structural monitoring system which was installed on a 50m high lattice tower in Romania, Timiș county, Sânnicolau Mare.

The monitoring system includes:
